PTRC Sustainable Energy was awarded the Suzanne West Environmental Excellence Award at this year’s Global Energy Show in Calgary.  The award, presented at a gala luncheon at Calgary’s BMO Convention Centre on June 12th, recognizes initiatives and technological advancements that have reduced the environmental footprint of the energy industry.

The PTRC’s Aquistore project was singled out for its importance in the advancement of CO2 storage projects in Canada and internationally.  Aquistore, with over 620,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide stored in a deep saline aquifer at a depth of 3300 metres, is the first project in the world storing CO2 captured from a coal-fired power station (SaskPower’s Boundary Dam facility near Estevan). The project has facilitated the utilization and testing of many different measurement and monitoring technologies that have since been deployed at other CCUS projects.

“We are honoured to have been chosen this year as the recipient of the Suzanne West Environmental Award,” notes PTRC’s CEO Ran Narayanasamy. “The recognition of Aquistore – and of our other research and demonstration projects in geothermal energy and enhanced oil recovery – is tied to many of our research and funding partners like Innovation Saskatchewan, University of Regina, and countless other universities and industry clients. We’d also like to thank Saskatchewan’s Energy and Resources Minister Colleen Young for attending the gala. Thanks to everyone for their support.”

Other nominees for the award included Greengate, an Alberta solar power company, and Saudi Aramco which in recent pipeline projects has focused on wildlife habitat restoration.
