PTRC ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF ERIK NICKEL AS PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

May 27, 2026                         For Immediate Release

PTRC Sustainable Energy today announced the appointment of Erik Nickel to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer.  Erik has been the Chief Operating Officer at the PTRC since 2023 and has been with the company for 14 years.

“Our decision to offer Erik this position is reflective of our confidence in his leadership and, equally, the standing and respect he commands in the oil and gas sector,” said PTRC’s Chair Tina Beaudry. “Erik brings with him an advanced understanding of enhanced oil recovery, CO2 geological storage, and all forms of subsurface energy utilization.”

Erik graduated with a geology degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1994, and worked for several years for the Saskatchewan Geological Survey.  In 2008 he graduated with a Master of Science from the University of Regina with a thesis that focused on the Weyburn CO2 enhanced oil recovery project.  This made him a natural fit for the PTRC, which he joined in 2014.  He has brought his knowledge from Weyburn and further oil field experience to bear in developing the Aquistore CO2 deep saline storage project, which is the permanent storage component of SaskPower’s Boundary Dam CCS facility. He has actively played roles in developing geothermal and enhanced oil recovery research programs at the PTRC.

“Direct field experience, and a keen awareness of the structure and operations of the PTRC made this decision the best for the company, its clients, and its funders,” notes Beaudry. “In particular, his appointment reflects the Government of Saskatchewan’s commitment to increasing oil production to 600,000 barrels per day by 2030.”
